DFI - Week 9 Reflective Blog Post

 Manaiakalani Pedagogy - Ubiquitous Learning - Putting the learner at the centre of all decisions so educators have their best learning needs at the centre of all decisions.  - The idea that you are a learner anytime, anywhere.  - The ability to learn digitally out of school and not with the teacher sitting right next to you.  - Being able to leave the resources and be able to access valuable learning when teachers aren't in the classroom  - If learning is available online, it is rewindable for students  - Lock down showed that majority of learning was through a screen of some sort (device, tablet, TV etc).  - The tools of a student having a device and access to the internet is life changing.  - "If it's worth teaching and learning its worth capturing".   What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? Empowerment - learners and teachers through the digital age. "The Maniakalani kaupapa of empowerment is about advancing Rangatiratanga: taking back control of their own lifes. Need to actively show teachers the power of a digital tool for their learners. Voice - choice - ownership: learning being exciting and engaging as if it isn't, students won't by in and complete it. Empowering students on digital devices so they can be creators and show their voice through their digital learning. A digitally fluent person can decide how to use digital technology in the most effective way to achieve tasks or solve problems.   What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? Why Cybersmart? - connection to one-to-one devices, digital learning was a way we could support and empower or students Cybersmart - acknowledges empowering people by being "smart". If we are encouraging them to connect online anytime anywhere it is our responsibility to support them to be safe and smart online. Enables students to be confident and safe when connecting online "It's about digital citizenship, it's about the do's and the don'ts". Need to be confident with the Cybersmart language you are using.   What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? Connection: the importance of every day connection with people To make a connection with others, each party needs to share in some shape or form. Face to face connection is important for wellbeing and connectedness Sharing on class sites - power of children sharing their learning with each other When young people are learning and sharing with others, they feel a part of something and it brings people and children together. Class site - visually appealing so that the audience is hooked. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? Reflecting and analysing a classroom site - what works well, what doesn't, what's visually appealing. I can take this knowledge and apply it to my own site. Teaching and learning being visible - makes it available and accessible to both teachers and learners Cultural Capital: How the background you come from influences how you read and deal with certain situations Multi Modal - hooking learners into learning and empowering them so they are confident and successful Multi Modal - All about communicating information from one person to another Manaiakalani Priority Goals/Principles: engagement, personalised learning, acceleration, empowerment Giving them the skills to be a lifelong learner as they have the ability to access learning online - setting them up for life.   What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? The importance of SHARE - how powerful it is for students to share their learning to their teachers and others so they can be recognised/celebrated. Sharing to an authentic audience. Face to face sharing vs. through a screen - missing the human connection/one-to-one Social media being the only platform where you can share with people you haven't met from all over the world. Important thought - how can we teach our students to be digital citizens who share positively and securely online. Blogger platform is teaching our learners to be cyber smart. Hard to teach students how to be digital citizens if they aren't engaging in it Share - a way in which we can show that I have finished a piece of learning work. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? - Manaiakalani was established in 2006 - I t is an initiative that works with learners and teachers to motivate and engage in the curriculum - Goal is to support learning in a digital environment. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional? - That if learners are not shown basic formatting, they won't know it. This can have a flow on effect into their future skills and abilities in a digital world. - It is important for teachers to spend time teaching skills and not assume that all learners know the basics. - Community of learners: learning alongside other people from all across the country What did I learn that could be used with my learners?   - Voice type is a great tool on Google Docs that I could incorporate into my classroom/teaching practise. - Table, contents and heading settings on Google Docs.
